Safety Practices

General Good Safety Practices

Students, teaching assistants, and instructors will at all time wear Safety Glasses or goggles in the laboratory. Students who are in the laboratory without Safety Glasses on will be asked to leave the laboratory and will bve considered absent for the day. A repeated infraction, as noted above, will result in administrative withdrawal from the course.

Lab goggles will be available in the lab, but if you want a really good pair to keep scratch-free, I suggest the "Flexible Protective Goggles with Lexan" ($3.99), also suitable for working in the shop or when you're using your chainsaw.

Prevent Accidents With Safety (PAWS)

One should pause to evaluate each laboratory environment and situation before acting. We have instituted a program in Chemical Engineering to help us do just that. The PAWS program is found on the PAWS Web Page.

Safety Assessment (SAFE)

The Safety Assessment Form (SAFE) provides a rapid means for identifying potential hazards in the Chemical Engineering Laboratory. SAFE acts as a useful reference which displays possible hazards that can occur in each step in an experiment. The program is part of the preparation aof a laboratory experiment and the method for contunual improvem, ent of Safety Practices in the Labborartory. The SAFE program is described on the SAFE Page.
